Tom: Could you please create a blog post titled "Prize Payouts" or something so that we can discuss the proposed payments below?

All team owners: I don't think the prize breakdown needs much tweaking; it follows recent precedent fairly closely. It is true that the $400 championship prize is a bit higher than normal - that number has always been roughly one-third of the total money - so it could drop as low as $350 if we think money needs to be redistributed elsewhere.

The overall second place money is kind of high, too, with prizes dropping pretty sharply for third and fourth place. But again, that reflects the accepted thinking of recent years. The consensus has been that getting a shot at the real money at the Big Dance has been reward enough for teams finishing third and fourth in the regular season, which is not generally regarded as that much of an achievement. Top Four finishers are guaranteed some money under the format below.

In the past, participants in the one-match third place playoff at the Big Dance have agreed to combine the prizes for third and fourth place and play winner-take-all. That is up to those competing. The third-place playoff at the NIT is strictly for order of finish; any wagering is unofficial. A score will be recorded whether team owners are actively engaged or not.

With the added teams and larger purse, we can restore payouts equal to the full entry fee for the regular season champion and the points titleist, something I feel very strongly about. Those are paramount accomplishments. I do not see kicking any of that money to lower finishers when we are in a position to reward those achievements appropriately.

Also, I think I'm about to create a new tradition wherein the cost of engraving the name of each new champion on the Jason Hart Trophy will be deducted from the championship prize money. (I think it costs, like, 12 bucks.) No whining, or I'll deduct money from past champions retroactively.

Any and all reasonable discussion welcome. Otherwise, let's get back to business and see who'll be our newest reigning champion.
