You guys: We need to clarify what happens if Teams 4 and 5 finish with identical records. I don't believe the points tiebreaker sends a team to the dance. I think there has to be a one-match playoff. I think this has happened before, but I am not going to have time to go to the deep archives. Tom? Dave? Anybody?

If it comes to it, I'll vote for a one-match playoff. And if so, do the other playoff series begin or does everybody wait?

Being the likely high point winner in a tiebreaker you'll certainly understand why I'd question the need for the playoff. If we've been placing teams with identical records in the standings in order of points scored for years why would the final standings be any different??

I vote for a one game playoff. Forty Games instead of 35 I also vote for.
I believe Mark is correct about the points as a tie breaker advantage in the past. But that was because playoff ties pushed the season closed to the end of available match periods in the NBA schedule.

Speaking of finishes, the finest game winning shooter in Brooklyn history just got waived.
Kevin Garnett revealed that he and his Nets teammates had coined the nickname Joe Jesus to reflect Johnson’s heroic play. “He might not be there when you call on him, but he’s there when you need him,” Garnett said at the time.

I don't see the difference I'm being penalized because rhe season is shorter.I think we shouldn't be able to change the rules now because we have extra time.I'm vehemently against this so I suppose if there were a tie for first second or third we'd have playoffs for those? It's nonsense!! If the standings are always determined traditionally by points scored when there is a tie it's completely unfair to me to change it because we have extra time. That's something that needed to be addressed before we started.I'm really unable to understand the logic do we just the change the rules as we go along when we don't like the results??

If we vote to have the playoff then I will not participate I'll just let Dave have the spot I think it's completely unfair to change the rules when I've fought back to this position!!

Tom how to you think P4 and Wingos would react if we do away with home court advantage and make the playoffs best of 5?If you want me to agree to the one game tie playoff then I want home court advantage eliminated and the playoffs expanded. After all we have extra time now right?

mrkmosier@gmail.com said...

Or just add the 5 games back if you want to go by tradition but I will not participate in a one game playoff.I draw the line there as a matter of principle.

I lean towards total pts being the tie breaker. Better yet, head to head record and if tied, points. Then, if still tied, 1 game playoff.

Mark, cool off. I don't think we're changing any rules. Like I said, I think it's happened before, although I'm not certain. I'm just saying I can understand the thinking about not eliminating a team with as good a record as No. 4 on points alone, but I'm not wedded to anything.

Here are a couple past precedents that may be helpful. We had a 2 and 3 finish with identical records once. The tiebreaker determined the No. 2 seed, which I think was worth money at the time, but the double jeopardy went away in favor of a best-of-three, which was seen as more appropriate to the parity of the teams.
More recently, we had a 1 and 2 finish tied. Tiebreaker determined the No. 1 seed, but the two teams shared the regular season title and the money. Don't know if that clears anything up.

I understand the logic on both sides of the argument; I just don't know which would be the fairer ruling. I suppose we should keep talking and just hope it doesn't happen.

I tend to like:
1) Points
2) H2H
3) 1 game playoff

Unless of course, Mark takes his ball and goes home.

Tom, can you let go of the 40-match thing for the love of God? We can review it at the end of the season, but for now it's the law of the land. Geez.

By the way, the E Team texted Ticket with a change that results in this imposing lineup:

GayDave, LameArcus, Kyrie Eleison, Old Stringy Kobe, No Wits Ski, (Thadd) Young MC

Bust a move.

Hey, like any good bovine, I was just ruminating about the whole fourth-place tie thing and, yes, I see Mark's point. We have a tiebreaker, why not use it? I just thought it seemed unjust to summarily send off a team that had essentially matched the success of another. But points are certainly worth something. Having said that, the head-to-head matchup thing might be worth including in any future discussion as well.

I recant my previous assertion about my vote and am officially neutral on the matter at this time.

Mark, your "enthusiasm" regarding the issue is to be forgiven.

Jeez, I think Kyle Lowry might have just ended Swat's season.

And how fitting that he blew up my Kyrie (13) in the process. He's the guy I might have drafted had I been coherent enough to realize that Irving was going to miss half the season.

If it comes down to it I will gladly give Dave the spot take my ball and go home as he rather pathetically phrases it,for the record I'll give Dave every penny I win for past debts to satisfy arrears as long as the rules do not change. This is fucking ridiculous!! Eric has done the standings faithfully based on points being the tie breaker!I'm broke I don't play this for money guys this is a test of basketball acumen for me fuck the money!change the rules on this and I need to play elsewhere

mrkmosier@gmail.com said...

Eric either keep it as it always was based on points to break ties or play 5 more games but there will be no playin!!!

Mark, didn't you read my posts? Nobody is changing any rules. Like I said, I think the rule may already have been applied, or it could be that there never has been a rule. I just wanted to get out it front of it in case it actually happens.

I don't want anybody to be distracted from the amazing finish that is unfolding. If everybody is cool with the points tiebreaker in that scenario, fine. We can talk about it - and any other matters that need clarifying - after the season.

Back to it, people.

Oh how I love this LONG standing FBB league, Mark I have bailed on this league for a season based on the short sided nature of the memories of the participants in this league with regards to the loosely based Constitution of the PDX B-Ball league.

I will do some research and see if we can find precedence in regards to this issue.

I believe that points "rule the day" Mark, but will work to confirm.

I agree with Tom, 35 games suck, its like the season is over at thw All-Star Break, now that we are taking on free agents through Supplimental Drafts throughout the majority of season, no reason 40 games can't work when strength of team not solely predicated on draft results.

Long live Swat Team!
