An aside: After birthday dinner with family in one of those celebrity caricature pictured establishments called The Palm near Grand Central Station, I compared that fine meal to Flatbush fair: fatty chicken feet in take out chicken soup with dumplings in a Jamaican fast food joint. Or ox tail soup. Do they just use the tail? So much salt in both, shouldn't salt with whatever appear on the menu? That will Jack up one's thirst. On Sunday who gets that 40 guy Jack two owners didn't want?

Hal Chase, who's last name appears in practically every neighborhood here and around the nation, was famous for tanking. Chase Banks, like all the major banks, are linked in today's NY Times, to payday loan shylocks in the Caribbean.
Apparently Invaders will not take after Chase when Joe J suits up tonite, hence, every team with a worse record will beat every better opponent in the standings this match. Now four teams are neck and neck heading into a desperate final month of the season.
In 1913, exactly a century ago:
¶ Chase was tolerated. The Yankees’ best player of the era and their captain, he had managed the team in 1910 and ’11 and had a .291 batting average for his 15-season career. But there were whispers that Chase often threw games for a gambler’s payoff, a practice he would admit to decades later, helping explain all those errors.
¶ “His neatest trick, I think, was to arrive at first base for a throw from another infielder just a split second too late,” Lieb wrote in his memoir.
¶ Chase also cheated his teammates at poker and sawed their bats in half for fun.
¶ “A strange character, a very strange character,” catcher Gabby Street once said of Chase.
¶ Frank Chance, the manager, was deaf in one ear as a result of repeated beanings. As the Yankees’ losses piled up, Chase took advantage of that.
¶ He would sit on the bench to the side of Chance’s deaf ear and mimic him. He would yell the same order while scrunching his face to mock Chance, deliberately misinterpreting his instructions. Some laughed, but not the starting catcher Ed Sweeney, who told Chance what Chase had been doing. By then, Chance had become aware of Chase’s antics.
