Position Paper on Proposed Changes

Dave, my point in my comments about Stacy's team management was that a certain amount of restraint may be one way to keep teams from falling out of contention, which is more of a scourge than DNPs will ever be.

I completely disagree with your notion that permission to make unlimited bad moves is good for the league.

The discussion post was a chance for everybody to make - and see - arguments for changes in league policies. You made clear that you're in favor of unlimited trades and free agency. Cool. You're entitled to feel that way. I'm just not sure that everyone agrees.

What's obvious to me is that the changes you're proposing have very little to do with technology or moving into the modern world. They represent a basic philosophical difference about what a fantasy league should be about.

Unlike Stacy, I do feel that a team's fortunes should be tied very closely to what happens on draft night. That's the whole point. Who can, based on knowledge of the league and its players, predict most accurately what will happen in the upcoming season?

Admit it, Dave, guys like you and Stacy are action junkies. I'm not, and I expect I may be speaking for others. I simply don't have time to stretch out the GM work through the season. I'd rather do what I can on draft night and make a move or two on an emergency basis. I've got my hands full just trying to figure out who to put on the floor from match to match. This will probably horrify you, but my ideal season would be one in which I'd never have to make a single roster move.

Having said that, I'm keeping an open mind. We can open up the waiver wire and I think I've got some good ideas for how to do it. The dual position designation thing makes me nervous, and I don't feel like we've thought it through completely, but we might be able to make something work.

Expanding lineups to mitigate the effects of the DNP? No. By that logic, we should just have our entire rosters active in each match, but nobody is going to take on that administrative load. The DNP is a fact of life and it affects all teams. Draft guys that don't get hurt. Draft quality players as backups. Go to injury sites for current info. In other words, live with it.

And trades? No way. I have no idea how we would create a mechanism for judging whether even the well-intentioned stuff would be allowable, let alone the kind of shit people would inevitably try to pull.

Angling for available free agent talent is one thing, but opening the door to dubious alliances between league members is a nightmare waiting to happen. It's the best way I can think of to completely wipe out any advantage gained by teams that draft intelligently and I have no desire to waste my time trying to referee it.

Dave, you're probably not going to believe this, but I'm actually kind of excited about trying some new stuff. Really. But I also think you know there are places I simply won't go, and it has nothing to do with being old-fashioned.

This league is unique and very cool in many ways. The fact that you know people that would not be interested in joining it does not phase me in the least. They probably wouldn't drive my '94 Sentra with the peeling paint, either.

I think we've found the magic number with eight teams. We retool a little bit at the end of this season, find a couple of quality franchises if need be; this thing is going to be in monster shape for the upcoming Golden Anniversary 15th Season.

That's after we see what kind of magic is in store for the remainder of this one. And anybody who isn't feeling that is simply in the wrong place.

Thanks for listening. Love and kisses to all.

If expanded free agency and some form of multiple position designations are in the works Invaders don't need trades or extra players beyond 6.The only thing I find odd is Eric's insistence that draft night is the whole deal and should be for convenience.Eric like other active owners check box scores on a regular basis and can see changes in playing time and position develop.A perfect example is what's happened after the trade deadline. For instance, the Kings lineup now features Thompson as the C instead of PF w/Landry now starting at 4,whether before the season or during it-we should be able to incorporate position changes like that into the game. It's simply illogical to say "draft guys who don't get hurt"-anybody can go down-basketball is debilitating to the human body over 82 games. The DNP issue will happen it's part of the game and I never meant for 7 guys to make up for DNPs- just as an alternative to multiple positions(i.e. 2 wild cards).I agree trades are not needed and would lead to problems-free agency is a better vehicle for improving teams during the season.

We agree roster moves will be unlimited, as long as someone administers to them, so DNPs are not as damaging. Plenty of egg on faces to go around. I like the dirtier look and smack that will evolve. Invaders may grieve me about Milsap in our NIT contest.

If trades were allowed, P4 could divide and collude between two teams. That would stink, but not as much as admitting the Nets, a hockey fan who hates the NBA. Better we find someone like Swat to participate than fill the void with multiple entries by the same owner. In lieu of the un-posted early call costing Swat And One's trophy, print Swat as the '09 winner. We need him back. Then Terry and Greg could team up for a single squad, or some one else.

Boy, I have nothing to add. Mark has stated exactly how I feel and posted more clearly then I could have. I'm not in favor of whole sale changes, but a few would be an improvement. Trades definitely don't need to be one of them.
I agree there is no clear solution for DNP's. So they are something that we will have to live with.
I'm still not clear on what "can of worms" we are opening up with multiple position designation?

Tom. Give the '09 title to Swat to entice him back into the league?

Sean lost a semifinal match because he failed to notice an early call and tried to game the system by claiming he would have pulled one of his most productive players had he known. And then he no doubt had Dave in his ear telling him how fucked up the league is.

I'd love to have Sean back, and I'll be the first one to invite him, but he can get his name on the trophy when he wins himself another title.

Jesus, do you have any spine whatsoever?

Oh E, you have it backwards. I was looking for anyone to recruit to plead my case. I feel nothing about how that season ended other than the league commissioner (oops) should be responsible for early/late calls. Eric/Tom/Mark seem to be the only ones paying attention to early/late calls.

Your right E, with self-ego stroking posts like that, you and Tom will have fun with this league in the next year or two. Just you two and 6 "Kontrol" teams. You had to beg Dave and I to play this year. I had full intention to just draft, because I like the action, and leave! I hate this gerital state of the league and really cant stand the lack of anything. No drunkin Poole talk, no livly smack talk at the bar or even on line. No nothing!

What does this league have to offer? Age old marketing stratagies are the secret to success. Offer a package that people are interested in and people will play.

"Build it, and 'they' will come"
